About the Foundation

The George Hurst Foundation was established in 2021, as a means of promoting George Hurst’s teaching and performance legacy for the benefit of students of conducting and musicians worldwide.

The George Hurst Foundation is a charitable trust, providing:

  • Funding for the continuing development, maintenance, and promotion of The George Hurst Archive;
  • Bursaries or scholarships for students of orchestral conducting; in particular, for courses of study with direct relation to the teaching methods of George Hurst;
  • Funding, promotion, or support for academic research relating to the teaching, performing career, or musical approach of George Hurst specifically; or to the historical-contextual environment in which he worked; or the Toscanini-Barzin method, more widely.

We welcome financial donations and bequests, from anyone wishing to support our specific objectives and, more broadly, the education of orchestral conductors. If you wish to make a financial contribution to the foundation, please visit the ‘Donate’ page, here.

From those who worked/studied with George, or who knew him, we also welcome the following material for The George Hurst Archive:

  • Video material of lessons/classes/masterclasses, especially those featuring practical demonstration;
  • Photographs;
  • Tapes of radio broadcasts, especially from the period 1958 to 1982;
  • Anecdotes/reminiscences/testimonials.
